Controlling the weights of search terms

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

Although Socrates uses automatic scoring for the search terms (taking into account their indicativeness), nothing can replace the intelligent analyst that might want to steer the investigation in a specific direction. This can be done by setting a special weight to a term.
Options are:

Mandatory - include only results that contain this term
Boost - increase the score of results containing this term
Penalty - decrease the score of results containing this term.

Each change to the weights affects the order of the results. This can be a useful way to “collect” results which best answer several different aspects of the investigation: boost some terms, check top results - label/like them, then boost some other terms instead, check top results, etc. All annotated documents can later be found under the Displayed Results facet.
